Q- IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO, TO MAKE MY JET GO FASTER?
A- IT DEPENDS ON THE JET: IF IT IS AN EFFICIENT DESIGN -ie.
PROPER SIZED TAILCONE FOR THE FAN; ALSO, PROPER INLET SHAPE WITH CLEAN AIRFLOW.
THE SPEED IS MOSTLY A FUNCTION OF FAN RPM.
HOWEVER, THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT MAKE A JET GO FAST:
AIRFOIL SHAPE, WING SWEEP, SMOOTH SURFACE, INCIDENCE AND GENERAL CLEAN DESIGN.
Q- HOW DO I TUNE A TUNED PIPE IN A JET?
A- YOU DON'T HAVE TO: PRE-TUNED PIPES ARE AVAILABLE.
Q- WHAT IS A CHEATER HOLE?
A- IT IS A LARGE HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE MODEL SO THE FAN CAN GET ENOUGH AIR.
CHEATER HOLES ARE NOT A GOOD IDEA AS THEY ALLOW DIRT ETC. TO GET SUCKED IN AND
CAN DESTROY YOUR ENGINE AND FAN.
PARKINSON JETS DO NOT USE A CHEATER HOLE, THEY GET THEIR AIR FROM THE INTAKES
LIKE A REAL JET.
Q- HOW DO YOU START THE ENGINE IN A JET?
A- USUALLY WITH A STARTER EXTENSION (DEPENDING ON THE FAN).
SOME FANS USE A BELT START.
NEVER TRY TO START WITH YOUR FINGERS, BY FLIP STARTING.
Q- DO I NEED SPECIAL FUEL FOR MY DUCTED FAN ENGINE?
A- NO - BUT, YOU SHOULD USE A GOOD QUALITY FUEL WITH ENOUGH OIL.
THIS IS TRUE OF ANY HIGH PERFORMANCE APPLICATION, OF ANY MODEL AIR PLANE ENGINE.
ALSO, PLEASE KEEP IN MIND - SPEED IS RPM'S;
THE HIGHER THE RPM'S, THE HIGHER THE LUBRICATION DEMAND.
IF YOU ARE NOT CONFIDENT IN SETTING UP FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE,
THEN OUR ADVICE IS TO FLY YOUR JET A LITTLE SLOWER;
UNTIL YOU GAIN THE KNOWLEDGE TO GO FOR THE RPM'S, WITHOUT BLOWING YOUR ENGINE.
Q- IS THERE SPECIAL PAINT NEEDED FOR MY JET?
A- NO - ANY PAINT THAT IS FUEL PROOF IS OK; BUT,
SOME MATERIALS DO REQUIRE SPECIAL PAINTS OR THE EXCLUSION OF SOME PAINTS.
MOST KIT MANUFACTURERS WILL GIVE YOU A WARNING,
IF A PARTICULAR PAINT IS NOT TO BE USED.
Q- DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FIBERGLASS TO BUILD A JET?
A- NO - IT DEPENDS ON THE KIT; SOME KITS ARE FIBERGLASS, SOME BALSA
AND THE NEW (PARKINSON QUICK BUILD KITS) ARE HIGH IMPACT PLASTIC.
Q- DO I HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT FLYER TO FLY A JET?
A- NO - BUT SOME HIGH PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE IS HELPFUL;
THERE ARE SOME ENTRY LEVEL, DUCTED FAN KITS AVAILABLE.
THE REGAL EAGLE IS ONE OF THE BEST CHOICES;
BECAUSE, IT HAS AN 18 YEAR TRACK RECORD
AND IS PRICED ABOUT THE SAME AS A QUALITY PROP AIRCRAFT.
Q- DOES IT MATTER WHICH FAN I USE?
A- YES - GENERALLY, THE KIT MANUFACTURER WILL RECOMMEND A FAN FOR THEIR KIT.
IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO RETRO FIT A DIFFERENT FAN; BUT, IT HAS BEEN DONE.
Q- WHAT DO THEY MEAN "ENTRY LEVEL JET"?
A- AN ENTRY LEVEL JET IS GENERALLY THOUGHT OF, AS AN R/C FLYER'S FIRST JET;
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH A TRAINER - TO GET YOU STARTED IN R/C FLYING.
Q- MY JET IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FLY; IT IS UNSTABLE AND I HAVE TO
BE ON THE AILERONS EVERY SECOND. IS THIS BECAUSE IT'S A JET?
A- NO - A WELL-DESIGNED, WELL-BUILT JET WILL PROBABLY BE MORE STABLE, THAN YOUR PROP PLANES.
YOU ARE DESCRIBING HIGH-SPEED TIP STALL:
THE AIRFOIL MAY BE WRONG; THE C OF G MAY BE WRONG;
THE LATERAL BALANCE MAY BE OFF; OR, YOU MAY JUST BE JUST
TRYING TO FLY A TAIL-HEAVY, UNDER-POWERED, POORLY DESIGNED JET.
Q- THE WINGS IN MY REGAL EAGLE KIT ARE MARKED LEFT & RIGHT;
BUT, THE AIRFOIL LOOKS REVERSED. DO I HAVE THE WRONG WINGS?
A- YOUR WINGS ARE CORRECT. THE AIRFOIL DESIGN IS A "BOB PARKINSON REFLEX DELTA"
AND THE HIGHER CAMBER DOES APPEAR TO BE ON THE BOTTOM.
Q- CAN I USE MY VIOJET FAN IN A REGAL EAGLE?
A- YES - THE FAN UNIT MOUNTS ON RAILS.
ANY FAN THAT MOUNTS ON A RAIL, CAN BE USED IN A REGAL EAGLE.
THE THRUST TUBE SUPPLIED IS ADJUSTABLE FOR EACH FAN.
Q- I FLY FROM A GRASS FIELD. COULD YOU PLEASE GIVE ME THE SCOOP ON JETS?
I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ONE THAT WILL TAKE OFF FROM A SHORT GRASS FIELD.
A- THE REGAL EAGLE WAS DESIGNED FOR MODELERS LIKE YOU.
WHEN YOU ARE BUILDING THE REGAL EAGLE, YOU WILL HAVE TWO OPTIONS:
ONE IS FOR GRASS FIELDS; THE OTHER IS FOR TOP SPEED. YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH.
IF YOU CHOOSE THE GRASS FIELD OPTION, YOU CAN BE SURE -
YOU WILL TAKE OFF ROUGH GRASS, IN ABOUT 50 FEET OR LESS.
Q- WHY ARE TURBINES SO EXPENSIVE?
A- TURBINES ARE JUST THAT ... A REAL JET ENGINE.
DUCTED FANS ARE AN INTERNAL FAN;
THAT ARE DRIVEN BY A HIGH-PERFORMANCE, MODEL AIRPLANE ENGINE.
Q- IS A TACHOMETER NEEDED FOR A JET?
A- NOT ALWAYS ... IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE EXPERTISE TO SET UP A HIGH PERFORMANCE
ENGINE THEN IF YOU TACH IT, YOU CAN TELL US THE RPMs AND WE CAN HELP.
Q- CAN I USE A TURBINE IN A REGAL EAGLE?
A- YES, IT MOUNTS ON RAILS JUST LIKE A TRACTOR FAN, PARKINSON MODELS DOES NOT SELL
THE NEEDED STAINLESS THRUST TUBE AT THIS TIME BUT MOST WILL FIT.
